To reduce leakage inductance due to external wiring, the trainer-inductor module is designed to connect directly to rectifiers.

CORE LOSSES: 400 mW
The flat transformer and inductor module is specified for five volt operation at 250 kHz. The 150 watt rating is determined by the ratings of the rectifier, conservatively derated, and the inductor has been optimized for the corresponding current of 30 amps. 

The core and winding losses are very low at the operational point, about 400 milliwatt, suggesting that much higher voltage, frequencies and/or currents are practical. The core loss curves are given here t encourage the user to apply the module in other applications.

Core material: Premium high frequency low loss ferrites. Lower cost core materials are available on request.

 

HEAT SINK: Not Required
For nodal operation at 5.0 Volts at 250 kHz, the transformer-inductor module does not require a heat sink. However, the rectifier will require a heat sink. For good mechanical support, it is suggested that the modules be mounted on the rectifier heat sink or to the chassis next to the rectifier.
 

DIELECTRIC ISOLATION: 3 Layers Insulations
One layer of insulation is provided by the core's epoxy coating. A second layer of insulation can be provided by inserting a PTFE Teflon Sleeve through the cores. A third layer can be provided by using PTFE Teflon insulated hookup wires for the primary windings.
 

PRIMARY WIRE SIZING: 50 circular mils per amp is recommended.
Example: For 4 amps input, use AWG #28 or larger. Larger wire will be more efficient.
